Electric Company Automates Manual Property Tax Process with PTX

electric engineer in field

For one regional electric company’s small property and sales tax team, efficiency is key to managing a heavy workload. So, they turned to automation to save resources on time-consuming, manual tasks.

Peak Periods Weighed Down Small Team

Before implementing PTX’s TaxFeed, the regional electric company’s team had to manually key their bills into the PowerPlant property tax module and would find themselves working on bills every day between November and December.

“When property tax payments come up, attention is drawn away from other, more valuable tasks,” said the property and sales tax supervisor. “In those peak periods, we found ourselves dropping other projects to handle property tax compliance.”

So in 2014, they implemented TaxFeed, and they haven’t looked back. Thanks to the time savings afforded by TaxFeed, the electric company’s property and sales tax team focuses their energy on more productive, value-add projects.

“My time is better spent negotiating with taxing authorities, reviewing contracts, or finding ways to minimize transactional tax,” said the tax supervisor. “By automating a big piece of property tax compliance with TaxFeed, I’m given time back to spend on those value-add responsibilities.”

TaxFeed Improved Data Hygiene and Maintenance

In addition to saving time, TaxFeed also helps the regional electric company’s team make sure no assessments or bills are missing from their stack of mail.

“The value of working with PTX is that you can easily check for completeness by comparing what you get in the mail with the parcels in TaxFeed. Every year, there are a handful of bills that are missing, and now, we catch them,” said the tax supervisor.

With TaxFeed, they were able to reduce their reliance on paper mail, and as a result, the data going into PowerPlant is well-maintained and accurate. And because TaxFeed standardizes the values, they’re able to maintain clean data even when jurisdictions make changes to their billing process.

“In property tax, it’s hard to maintain consistency because things change so often. We had one jurisdiction go from sending one bill to about 100. But TaxFeed accounted for that change, and it was easy to keep the data in PowerPlant consistent,” said the tax supervisor.

Operating with Greater Efficiency

With few resources and a lot to cover, the regional electric company’s property and sales tax team always has new projects to work on. While property tax compliance is important, they can’t afford to spend a lot of time on it, and TaxFeed has made that efficiency possible.

“The more you can automate property tax, the better. TaxFeed takes a manual, mundane task and automates it, which lets us spend more time on the projects that add value,” said the tax supervisor.
